U.S. Treasury Reports Debt Surpassing $40 Trillion Amid Rising Fiscal Challenges

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – The total U.S. gross national debt has gone beyond $40 trillion, setting a record for federal borrowing levels. U.S. Treasury figures indicate that the total reached $40.047 trillion on Aug. 18. By Aug. 27, this amount had increased to approximately $40.078 trillion. Debt held by the public made up roughly $32.314 trillion, while government-held accounts accounted for about $7.764 trillion.

U.S. debt crosses $40 trillion amid mounting fiscal costs
Federal debt passes $40 trillion while U.S. budget deficits remain elevated.

This achievement occurred less than five months after the federal debt exceeded $39 trillion in March. In August 2016, the gross national debt was nearly $19.5 trillion, about half of today’s figure. The government accrues this debt when annual spending surpasses revenue, mainly covering the shortfalls through issuing Treasury bills, notes, and bonds to investors and government accounts.

The country’s fiscal health remains strained by large yearly budget deficits. According to the Congressional Budget Office, a deficit of $1.8 trillion was recorded for the first ten months of fiscal 2026. This figure was $169 billion higher than the same period in fiscal 2025. While revenue increased by $139 billion, or 3%, federal outlays rose by $308 billion, or 5%. The CBO estimates the full-year deficit will approximate $2.1 trillion.

Interest payments on the national debt top $1 trillion

Interest costs are now taking an increasing share of the federal budget. The net interest expense is forecasted to surpass $1 trillion in fiscal 2026, up from about $970 billion in 2025. This amount represents roughly 3.3% of the U.S. gross domestic product. Current projections indicate that annual net interest payments could reach $2.1 trillion by 2036, which would be about 4.6% of GDP at that time.

Furthermore, debt held by the public has grown relative to the economy’s size. Analysts estimate that by 2026, this measure will be about 101% of GDP, increasing to 120% by 2036. The previous peak was 106% in 1946, following World War II. Under the same scenario, publicly held debt could approach $56 trillion, with gross federal debt nearing $64 trillion in 2036.

Debt levels impact borrowing capacity and economic growth

The substantial federal borrowing influences financial conditions throughout the economy. The Congressional Budget Office has identified that increased government borrowing may lead to higher interest rates and a reduction in private investment over time. As a result, businesses have less capital for expansion and productivity improvements, which can also affect worker wages and household income. Consumer borrowing rates for mortgages, auto loans, and other credit products are impacted by broader interest-rate trends.

While gross national debt and the federal deficit measure different aspects of government finance—debt reflecting accumulated obligations and the deficit representing yearly gaps—both indicators remain high in fiscal 2026. The gross debt exceeds $40 trillion, and the projected annual deficit stands at $2.1 trillion, equivalent to about 5.8% of GDP, compared to a 50-year average of roughly 3.8%.
