KOROR, PALAU / RankWire.AI / – During a regional gathering in Palau, the United States revealed a support package exceeding $150 million aimed at Pacific Island nations. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau presented the package on September 1 at the Pacific Islands Forum Partners Dialogue. The allocated funds and aid encompass areas such as energy security, transportation, digital connectivity, maritime enforcement, and public service enhancements. According to the State Department, this comprehensive support combines multiple programs across Pacific Island countries.

US launches Pacific support package exceeding $150 million
Pacific Island energy, digital and maritime projects form part of new US support.

A significant portion of the support, $60 million, is allocated to a Regional Energy Security Initiative. The State Department stated its intention to allocate these funds in collaboration with Congress. This initiative aims to back projects related to fuel storage and initiatives that bolster the stability of electricity grids. Additionally, U.S. officials detailed further infrastructure investments intended to enhance access to crucial services. However, some components are still awaiting congressional approval before funds can be disbursed.

Support for Tonga includes a study on its fuel transportation and storage systems. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency approved a grant of $1.42 million for this feasibility assessment, which will analyze port facilities, pipelines, storage capacity, and Tonga’s fuel pricing structure. The plan involves exploring the possibility of increasing the country’s fuel reserves from about 15-20 days to approximately 60 days. This project is part of the broader regional energy package.

Energy projects emphasizing storage and infrastructure development

Among the initiatives, a $50 million U.S. contribution is designated for upgrading a port on Penrhyn in the Cook Islands. New Zealand will contribute NZ$17.5 million and lead the implementation efforts alongside the Cook Islands and the United States. The port upgrade aims to improve safety standards, cargo handling capabilities, and transportation access for the remote atoll. The project will also facilitate better connections to local services. The funding announcement coincided with the regional discussions held in Palau.

The program extends into digital infrastructure and transportation projects for Tonga, Palau, and the Marshall Islands. The U.S. Trade and Development Agency will fund a study to modernize Tonga’s national data center and network. In the Marshall Islands, technical assistance will address improvements to the mobile network, key ports, and Amata Kabua International Airport. Palau is set to benefit from a feasibility study concerning the relocation of Belau National Hospital. These projects enhance communications, aviation, and public infrastructure components within the broader support package.

Expanding maritime security and technological initiatives

The U.S. also intends to allocate $17 million toward programs targeting illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities, contingent on congressional approval. These initiatives include legal reforms, compliance training, and the deployment of advanced monitoring technologies. Furthermore, Washington and Palau will co-host a new conference gathering Pacific police ministers, focusing on maritime safety, drug trafficking, cybercrime, and illicit financial flows. U.S. representatives highlighted law enforcement measures as part of the broader commitments to Pacific Island nations.

Additional projects aim to enhance environmental monitoring and water services through cloud technology, seabed mapping, and drinking water initiatives. Support for Pacific governments’ cloud infrastructure and marine mapping efforts will be expanded, while Palau will receive assistance for a drinking water sampling program, including training for operators and laboratory personnel. The total support exceeds $150 million, covering planned funding, grants, and technical assistance. Some projects are already backed by agencies, while others await congressional approval.
