OpenAI Announces Removal of Chat Limitations for Free and Go Users of ChatGPT

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT for Free and Go subscribers by eliminating text chat restrictions under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that unlimited text conversations will be available starting next week, while safeguards against misuse remain in place. Luna is also becoming the default model for these plans during the current rollout, and Free users will soon receive a new Think button. This feature enables the model to spend extra time reasoning through more complex queries before providing a response.

The increased allowance applies solely to standard text exchanges and does not cover all ChatGPT functionalities. Limits will still apply to image generation, file uploads, and other tools that demand additional computing resources. OpenAI stated that the Think button will be introduced alongside unlimited text access next week. Users can activate it when a question warrants extra reasoning time. This update broadens the core conversational capabilities for Free and Go accounts while maintaining separate limits for other features and services.

GPT-5.6 comprises multiple models, including Luna, Sol, and Terra, each optimized for different performance requirements. Luna is designed as the faster, more cost-effective option within the family. OpenAI noted that approximately one billion people now utilize ChatGPT weekly for tasks like research, planning, writing, and searching. The latest update designates Luna as the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users, while other GPT-5.6 models remain accessible within products tailored for various workloads and access levels.

Enhanced free access while tool restrictions stay in place

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro are now using an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model that supports routine tasks and complex reasoning. The company explained that Sol now provides more targeted answers and reduces unnecessary detail when shorter responses suffice. Paid members can also utilize a reasoning slider on web, mobile, and desktop platforms, enabling them to control how much processing power the model applies to each request. This feature is useful for research, coding, writing, planning, and other activities requiring different levels of reasoning.

OpenAI also shared results from internal testing focused on factual accuracy within its latest models. These evaluations included financial, medical, and legal questions that demanded detailed factual responses. The company reported a reduction of roughly 62% in answers containing at least one factual error with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. Additionally, GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated about a 68% decrease in errors under the same testing conditions. OpenAI highlighted improvements in performance related to dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when such details impacted the final answer.

New protections added to models for younger users

The GPT-5.6 models feature enhanced safeguards designed for users believed to be under 18. These protections restrict content involving romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could promote replacing real-world relationships. Additional boundaries are enforced against sexual material, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. OpenAI stated that it has implemented further assessments for responses involving younger users. The same abuse safeguards will continue to be enforced when unlimited text conversations are made available to Free and Go accounts under the expanded ChatGPT service.

This rollout affects the main ChatGPT platform and does not alter every product utilizing GPT-5.6. Versions of GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged in this update. Users with Plus and Pro subscriptions can now access the improved Sol model and reasoning controls. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week, with unlimited conversations and the Think button following next week. Separate limits will remain in place for images, uploads, and other resource-heavy tools.
