MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the options available for the Gemini model to free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will only be able to access Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. Access to Flash or Pro models will be withdrawn under the updated policy. The company outlined these modifications in its revised support documentation for its consumer AI services. These rules affect personal Google accounts specifically, not those managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Customers subscribed to Google AI Plus will still be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash after the changes are implemented. Nonetheless, their subscription will no longer include Pro access. Google has not provided a single, universal transition date for all AI Plus users. Instead, affected customers will be notified via email about when their access rights change. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will retain access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro models.
Flash-Lite functions as an optimized Gemini model aimed at quick responses and routine tasks. The Flash model offers additional features while maintaining fast response times for various requests. Pro is designed to handle more complex workloads, such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google states that the model can process text, files, images, and videos while applying deeper reasoning. Responses from Pro may take longer than those generated by other Gemini models due to the increased processing requirements.
Wider model access remains available for paid Gemini subscriptions
The company is also introducing effort level settings—low, medium, and high—for models included in a user’s plan. Higher effort modes allow models to dedicate more resources to producing detailed responses but also use more of the account’s usage allowance. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will gain access to Deep Think, which is tailored for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that applies maximum parallel reasoning when tackling demanding requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier modifications to how Gemini Apps calculate usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google introduced compute-based limits that refresh every five hours until weekly thresholds are reached. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. More advanced features and premium models tend to consume these allowances more rapidly than basic requests. Additionally, Google extended these usage limit rules to users under 18 on July 24.
Subscription plans for Google AI vary in usage restrictions
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to standard usage limits. AI Plus offers twice the standard allowance, while AI Pro increases it fourfold. AI Ultra provides either five times or twenty times the AI Pro’s quota, depending on the plan. Tools such as Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can utilize larger portions of these limits. Consequently, paid plans come with higher usage thresholds and broader model access.
The October updates pertain specifically to Gemini Apps accessed through personal Google accounts and do not regulate all Google AI services. Accounts managed through workplaces or educational institutions follow separate access policies, and developer services operate under different rules. Users can modify, upgrade, or cancel Google AI plans via Gemini Apps and Google One. From October 9, free personal account users will rely solely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access policies are implemented.
