PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – An unvaccinated woman from Jefferson County, aged 40, succumbed to measles infection, according to local health officials. Her death occurred on September 12 amid the state’s largest measles outbreak in over thirty years. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the virus from a sample taken from her. After reviewing her medical records, authorities classified her death as measles-related. This incident marked Pennsylvania’s third measles-associated fatality in 2026 and heightened concerns about the escalating number of cases across the state.

Pennsylvania measles cases hit 693 as death toll reaches four
Measles cases and hospitalizations continue across Pennsylvania during the 2026 outbreak.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office initially indicated that complications linked to a probable measles infection contributed to her death. Subsequent laboratory results verified an active case of measles. The woman had not received any measles vaccination. Authorities have chosen not to publicly identify her, citing respect for the family’s privacy. Her case emerged during an outbreak that has affected both children and adults alike. Measles can lead to severe health issues, especially among those lacking immunity or at increased risk of medical complications.

As of September 14, Pennsylvania has documented 693 confirmed cases of measles across 38 counties. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also reported 133 hospitalizations related to the outbreak. Only four confirmed cases involved individuals who were considered properly vaccinated for their age. Data from the state indicates that the majority of patients did not have full protection from the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The outbreak, which has spread across multiple communities since spring, represents one of the most significant measles events in the state in decades.

Pennsylvania reports total of four fatalities

Health authorities confirmed a fourth death related to measles on September 15 involving an 18-year-old from Mifflin County who had not been vaccinated. The county coroner determined that the cause was acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, a rare neurological complication that can follow measles infection. Earlier, Pennsylvania had reported two measles-related deaths in Lancaster County on August 25, both involving infants who were too young to receive routine immunizations. These fatalities marked the first measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania in 35 years.

Measles transmits through the air when an infected individual coughs, sneezes, or breathes, with the virus remaining infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Initial symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes. A rash usually appears several days later, often starting on the head and spreading downward. Symptoms may develop between seven and 21 days after exposure. Health officials advise anyone experiencing possible measles symptoms to contact a healthcare provider before seeking treatment to prevent further spread.

United States sees continued rise in measles cases

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,294 confirmed cases of measles nationwide as of September 10, 2026. Cases have been reported across 47 jurisdictions. Additionally, federal data indicates that MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarteners has declined, falling to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year from 95.2% in 2019-2020. Public health experts generally consider vaccination rates above 95% essential to prevent sustained transmission of measles within communities.

According to public health guidance, two doses of the MMR vaccine offer approximately 97% protection against measles. The disease can lead to severe complications such as pneumonia and brain swelling. Officials in Pennsylvania estimate that nearly 20% of individuals diagnosed in the ongoing outbreak have required hospitalization. Those who suspect they have been exposed should monitor for symptoms during the incubation period. Anyone developing signs of illness is advised to call a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital, allowing staff to implement measures that minimize additional exposure.
