National Weather Service Reports Seven Fatalities Amid Indiana Flooding Crisis

INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – Indiana has been hit by intense storms and extensive flooding that resulted in at least seven fatalities. Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow their banks and inundated roads, residences, and commercial properties. The severe weather event started on August 11 and persisted through multiple rounds of rain. Central and southern Indiana experienced some of the worst flooding, prompting emergency teams to conduct rescue operations, evacuate residents, and assess damage across affected areas over several days.

State authorities confirmed that the victims included a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women. The fatalities occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two deaths, while the remaining counties each confirmed one. Among the recent casualties was a 31-year-old cyclist found in Henry County after floodwaters damaged a section of road.

The National Weather Service noted that some locations received over 10 inches of rain during the storm system. The White River saw dramatic rises as successive storms moved across the state, reaching historic levels in Anderson and Noblesville—exceeding records dating back to 1913. Indianapolis faced its most severe flooding in more than 30 years, with water spilling into low-lying neighborhoods.

Floodwaters necessitate rescue operations and evacuations

Emergency responders employed boats to reach residents stranded by the rising waters in multiple communities. Local officials issued evacuation orders or provided assistance in areas where streets and neighborhoods became hazardous. In Noblesville, authorities reported approximately 170 evacuations over a 72-hour span, affecting more than 550 residential units. As conditions worsened, Indianapolis activated emergency shelters and dispatched rescue teams to regions near the White River.

The storms also led to widespread power outages across Indiana, with nearly 130,000 utility customers still without electricity late Sunday. Outages peaked at nearly 300,000. Floodwaters caused road closures, structural damage to bridges, and pavement washouts across several counties. After the White River crested and began receding, Indianapolis reopened floodgates, while local crews continued inspecting infrastructure and residents began returning to homes impacted by water and debris.

    Federal assistance bolsters relief efforts

Governor Mike Braun issued a statewide disaster emergency declaration in response to the storms’ pressure on local response capabilities. Subsequently, President Donald Trump approved an emergency declaration for Indiana upon the state’s request for federal aid. Under this declaration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is authorized to assist state, tribal, and local authorities. Federal support is designated to fund emergency efforts aimed at safeguarding lives, public health, safety, and property. Meanwhile, agencies at the state and local levels continued recovery operations as floodwaters gradually receded.

By Sunday evening, some river gauges indicated improvement from their peak levels, yet flood concerns persisted. The White River’s levels transitioned from major to moderate flood stage in some sections. Several monitoring sites near Indianapolis still registered water levels above flood thresholds. Damage assessments remained ongoing across communities affected by flooding, infrastructure failures, and power outages, with residents undertaking cleanup efforts at homes, businesses, and public spaces as Indiana begins to recover from this weather disaster.
