Alaska’s Earthquake Monitoring Center Reports a Magnitude 5.0 Shake in the Aleutians

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – Late Saturday, a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck southeast of Atka in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the seismic event at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s epicenter was located approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka, with scientists estimating its depth at roughly 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles, placing it within a notably active seismic zone.

Magnitude 5.0 quake hits Alaska’s Aleutian Islands
Atka sits within Alaska’s seismically active Aleutian island chain.

The event was centered near 51.8286 degrees north latitude and 173.2496 degrees west longitude. Atka, situated on Atka Island along the central Aleutian chain, is a small community positioned far from Alaska’s larger population centers and within a region known for frequent seismic activity. The epicenter was also southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass. The broader area surrounding Saturday’s earthquake is dotted with islands, volcanic formations, and underwater geological structures.

The magnitude 5.0 quake originated at a relatively shallow depth typical for the Aleutian seismic system. Earthquakes beneath this island chain can occur from near the surface to much deeper within the Earth’s crust. The region is situated along a significant boundary where the Pacific Plate moves beneath the North American Plate, forming the Aleutian Arc. This ongoing tectonic process results in frequent earthquakes across much of southern and western Alaska.

Seismic activity shaped by the tectonic boundary

The Aleutian Arc spans a wide section of the North Pacific and is among Alaska’s most seismically active zones. The process responsible is subduction, where one tectonic plate slides beneath another, capable of generating earthquakes at shallow, intermediate, and deep levels. Alaska experiences thousands of earthquakes annually across its mainland and offshore regions, with many events occurring beneath the Aleutian Islands, where the plate boundary extends westward for hundreds of miles.

Historically, the Aleutian region has seen several major earthquakes. A magnitude 8.6 tremor struck the Andreanof Islands in 1957, and a magnitude 8.7 quake occurred near the Rat Islands in 1965. Large seismic events also took place in the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. While these historic quakes were much larger than Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 event, they highlight the broad spectrum of seismic activity along the Aleutian plate boundary.

Regional networks continuously monitor seismic events in Alaska

Seismic activity in the Aleutian region can originate from various parts of the tectonic system, either close to the main boundary or deeper within the Pacific Plate as it dips beneath Alaska. Shallow earthquakes can also develop above the plate boundary itself. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a national earthquake database and reviews seismic data across the United States. Its monitoring efforts complement regional systems that cover Alaska’s expansive and remote landscape.

Saturday’s seismic event adds another moderate earthquake to the extensive record of activity in the Aleutian Islands. The key parameters used to characterize this quake are its magnitude, location, and depth. Seismic stations throughout Alaska detect ground motion from events in both populated and isolated areas, with specialists analyzing the signals to improve the accuracy of earthquake locations, magnitudes, and depths. The August 8 tremor near Atka exemplifies the ongoing seismic activity regularly documented by monitoring networks across Alaska and the surrounding North Pacific region.
