U.S. President’s Map Displays American Flag Spanning North America and Greenland

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump shared an image on Truth Social illustrating the U.S. flag extending across a large portion of North America. The graphic depicted Canada, Mexico, and Greenland beneath a design labeled “United States of America,” also stretching over Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. The post contained no accompanying text explaining the image. Geographic labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America remained visible on the graphic.

Trump map shows US flag across Canada, Mexico and Greenland
The Truth Social map placed Canada, Mexico and Greenland beneath US flag imagery.

The map was posted at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 via Trump’s official Truth Social account. No border modifications, treaties, or government orders were referenced in the post. Canada and Mexico continue to be recognized as independent nations with established borders, and Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Iceland stays an independent nation. The image did not specify any legal procedures that might change the status of the countries or territories depicted under the U.S. flag.

This map was part of a series of recent geography-themed posts from the president. Earlier images included replacing the name of New Mexico with “New America,” and he also promoted “Lake America” as a new name for Lake Ontario. Previously, his administration instructed federal agencies to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.” The president has also advocated for U.S. ownership of Greenland, though Danish and Greenlandic authorities have rejected proposals to transfer control of the Arctic territory.

Mexico Responds with Statement of Sovereignty

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum issued a response reaffirming Mexico’s independence and sovereignty. She emphasized that the country would not become a colony or protectorate of any other nation. Her remarks coincided with September, a month dedicated to Mexico’s annual independence celebrations. The map placed Mexico under the same U.S. flag pattern as Canada and other regions. No legal documents or bilateral agreements concerning the U.S.-Mexico border accompanied the post. Existing border arrangements remained in effect following the publication of the graphic.

The image also depicted Canada entirely covered by the U.S. flag. Trump has previously suggested the idea of Canada joining the United States. On September 7, he also threatened restrictions on Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier unless it moved production to the U.S. Meanwhile, Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods after trade negotiations stalled. These trade measures were separate from the map post and did not impact Canada’s territorial or political status.

    Greenland Continues Under Danish Control

Greenland was prominently shown beneath the U.S. flag in the graphic. The president has repeatedly voiced the desire for the U.S. to acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns. Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected U.S. ownership claims. The European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership package for Greenland covering 2026 and 2027. This initiative supports digital infrastructure, energy, education, and sustainable mining efforts. Additionally, Denmark sent military personnel to Greenland in early September for Arctic training exercises.

The Truth Social image lacked any caption explaining its purpose or legal implications. It did not announce any policy, territorial transfer, or change to current national borders. Mexico continues as a sovereign nation, Canada remains an independent state, Greenland retains its status as a self-governing territory within Denmark, and Iceland also stays independent. The graphic thus functions as a presidential social media post without any legal measure altering the status of the depicted territories.
